Every year, the world pauses on February 6th to recognize the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of this deeply harmful practice and to reinforcing global efforts to end it once and for all. FGM is not just a cultural tradition, it is a violation of human rights, a form of gender-based violence, and a threat to the physical and emotional well-being of millions of women and girls.

The practice of FGM is still prevalent in many countries, often justified by tradition, social norms, or even misguided religious beliefs. It involves procedures that alter or cause injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The consequences are severe and lifelong ranging from chronic pain and infections to complications in childbirth and severe psychological trauma. Many survivors live with a sense of loss, robbed of a choice they never had the chance to make.

Efforts to end FGM have grown stronger over the years. Governments, human rights organizations, and activists have pushed for stricter laws, education programs, and community dialogues to challenge the cultural acceptance of this practice. In many places, progress has been made, but change remains slow in some deeply rooted societies where FGM is seen as a rite of passage or a means to control female sexuality.

Ending FGM requires collective effort. It is not just about laws and policies but more about changing mindsets. Communities must be educated on the dangers of FGM and empowered to break free from harmful traditions. Survivors must be supported, their voices amplified to help others understand the real impact of this practice. Men and boys also have a role to play in standing against it, as gender equality is not just a women’s issue but a human rights issue.

The International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation is more than just a reminder of the work that remains, it is a call to action. Every conversation, every awareness campaign, and every policy change matters. The fight to end FGM is not just about protecting the next generation of girls, it is about ensuring that no one’s future is defined by pain, fear, or injustice. The world is watching, and silence is not an option. It’s time to break the cycle, challenge harmful traditions, and ensure that all girls, everywhere, have the right to grow up safe, healthy, and free.
